Why inclusivity Matters:

It’s a fact. Our world is made up of differently abled people. All too often, we hear about special needs proms or separate classrooms for students with special needs. But is that reflective of the world we live in?

Inclusivity- the practice or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of minority groups. -Oxford Dictionary

According to an article by understood.org, inclusive classrooms are mutually beneficial for both the individuals with special needs, and the students without. Inclusivity creates a society that is more comfortable and tolerant of differently abled people. If we can promote inclusivity outside of class, why wouldn’t we?

Enter, Danceathon, a chance to make inclusivity happen.

At MAGIC Dance Arts Inc., some of our students have special needs. Some have Autism, Down Syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy. Some don’t have any special needs at all.

What we want to create is a dance party that is fully inclusive of the community. Our goal is to show our students that events like school dances and weddings are fun and that they should attend! We strive to familiarize our students with this type of event and make them comfortable at an early age.

We need the community’s help to make this dance party as big as it can be. We rented out the Willow Glen High School Theatre in San Jose. We have a DJ. The awesome SF 49ers Cheerleaders have volunteered to help us with our event. All we need is you! RSVP to volunteer and dance with us!
